CLAREMORE, Okla. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Women's Basketball capped off its best season since 2017-18 with a 69-63 win over Rogers State Saturday at the Claremore Expo Center.
UAFS trailed 55-54 with 6:53 remaining before the Lions went on an 11-3 run over the next two minutes, with guard Telisha Brown contributing five points during the run. The Lions then hit four free throws to extend the lead to nine with 2:53 left.
The Hillcats hit a three with just over a minute remaining, but neither team scored the rest of the way as the Lions closed out the win.
The Lions overcame a slow start, falling behind 7-0 before rallying to take a 15-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. UAFS held the Hillcats to 25.0 percent shooting in the second quarter as they took a 31-22 lead into the locker room.
UAFS grew the lead to 13 early in the third quarter and led by seven after three, but the Hillcats started the fourth on a 10-2 burst before the Lions hit back-to-back threes by guard Anna Trusty and Brown.
Trusty paced the Lions with 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting to go with five rebounds, while guard Morgan Browning added 13 points and five boards. Brown contributed nine points off the bench.
The Lions forced 19 turnovers, leading to a 21-12 advantage in points off turnovers. The Lions also had a 12-8 edge in second chance points, and showed off their depth with a 22-2 margin in bench points.
UAFS has secured a berth in the MIAA Tournament next week in Kansas City, with the bracket being announced by the league office later this evening.
