Lions sweep Jets for first MIAA win

FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Volleyball earned its first MIAA victory Saturday with a 25-16, 25-16, 25-17 sweep of Newman at the Stubblefield Center.

The Lions defense held Newman to a .062 attack percentage, their lowest mark of the season. The Jets hit -.030 in set three.

UAFS got off to a slow start in the opening set, falling behind 13-11 before reeling off 10 straight points. Setter Scarlette Young had three aces during the run while outside hitter Nyia Anderson tallied three kills. The Lions then scored four of the final five points of the set to take the 1-0 lead.

The Lions kept the momentum from the strong finish into set two, leading 7-2 after getting two kills and a block by middle blocker Hannah Watkins. UAFS finished the set hitting .276 to go up 2-0.

In set three, the Lions broke open a 14-13 set with an 8-2 spurt as they ran away with the sweep.

Anderson and middle blocker Kaelyn McDonald each paced the Lions with 10 kills each with McDonald hitting .471 for the match. Anderson led the Lions with 13 digs while McDonald had a team-high seven blocks as the Lions had a 12-5 edge in total blocks.

Young dished out 18 assists to go with eight digs and four aces while setter Trinity Funderburk had 13 assists.

UAFS goes back on the road for the next two weekends, starting with a match at Central Missouri October 4 at 6 p.m.
