Volleyball preps for MIAA/GAC Crossover

FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Volleyball wraps up the majority of its nonconference slate this weekend as it travels to Central Oklahoma for the MIAA/GAC Crossover.

UAFS will play at Southern Nazarene at 6 p.m. Thursday while the remaining three matches will take place at the UCO campus in Edmond, Oklahoma. Friday the Lions will face East Central at 1:30 p.m. and Southeastern Oklahoma State at 6:30 p.m. before wrapping up the weekend Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against Oklahoma Baptist.

Thursday's match will be streamed on the SNU YouTube channel while the matches at UCO will be streamed on the MIAA Network. Live stats for all four matches can be found at uafortsmithlions.com.

NOTES:

LAST WEEK: The Lions went 3-1 at Denton Volleyfest, defeating a pair of old Lone Star Conference foes.

ALL-TOURNAMENT: Outside hitter Caelyn Gunn was named to the Denton Volleyfest All-Tournament team after tallying 46 kills and a team-high 68 digs.

LEAGUE LEADER: UAFS continues to lead the MIAA in blocks through nonconference play, averaging 2.71 blocks per set with 76 total blocks. Both middle blocker Hannah Watkins and right-side hitter Morgan Creer rank in the top five individually.

RECORD WATCH:  Gunn ranks 10th with 688 kills while Watkins ranks eighth with 195 total blocks.

SCOUTING SNU: The Crimson Storm have started the season 2-6 and will be playing their first home match of the season. They are allowing opponents to hit .251 while spreading the ball out offensively, having five players with more than 45 kills.

SCOUTING EC: The Tigers are 5-4 on the year, including a win over now nationally ranked Dallas Baptist. However, after starting the year 4-0, they have lost four of five matches. ECU features a pair of outside hitters in Emma Strickland and Odalys Gonzalez each with over 100 kills this season with setter Julia Kabala averaging 9.39 digs per set. Gonzalez and Strickland also lead the team in digs, as well.

SCOUTING SEOSU: The Savage Storm have won their last three matches to even their record at 4-4 on the year. Outside hitter D'Nari Mills leads SEOSU with 4.09 kills per set with libero Patience Lewis topping out at 3.94 digs per set.

SCOUTING OBU: The Bison are 5-5 to start the season and have four players with more than 80 kills. Setter Emily Boyer averages 10.24 assists per set while defensively, opponents are hitting .220.

THE SERIES: UAFS has had previous success against all four teams, going 4-1 against Southern Nazarene, 10-0 versus East Central, 7-1 against Southeastern Oklahoma and 5-5 against Oklahoma Baptist.
