Lions cap weekend with sweep of Midwestern State

DENTON, Texas – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Volleyball split its final day of Denton Volleyfest Saturday, falling 3-1 to Colorado Christian before sweeping Midwestern State, 3-0, in the nightcap.

UAFS has one more weekend of nonconference action with the MIAA/GAC Crossover September 19-21 in Edmond, Oklahoma.

Colorado Christian 3, UAFS 1

The Lions were held to their lowest offensive output of the season, hitting just .138 in the loss to the Cougars.

Each team won a set, 25-23, before CCU took a 2-1 advantage with a 25-20 win in set three. In set four, the Lions hit just .036 with only six kills in a 25-11 defeat.

Outside hitter Nyia Anderson recorded a double-double of 14 kills and 10 digs, while middle blockers Hannah Watkins and Kaelyn McDonald added eight and nine kills, respectively. Watkins hit .583 for the match.

Libero Brooke Rifkin tallied a team-high 19 digs to go with three aces, while setter Brelee Mauldin and outside hitter Caelyn Gunn each had 10. Mauldin dished out 15 assists for the Lions.

UAFS 3, Midwestern State 0

McDonald hit .526 with 11 kills as the Lions bounced back against a former conference foe. UAFS hit .268 for the match, including a blistering .441 in set two.

Right-side hitter Morgan Creer hit .438 with seven kills, while Gunn added 10 kills and a team-high 18 digs.

UAFS only trailed twice over the course of the entire match and had four runs of at least five straight points.

Anderson added 12 digs and Rifkin tallied 10. Rifkin also notched three aces for the second consecutive match. Mauldin set the offense up with 20 assists while adding nine digs, with setter Scarlette Young providing 15 helpers.
