FRISCO, Texas – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Women's Basketball saw its season come to a close Friday with a 61-50 defeat to No. 1 seed Texas Woman's in the Lone Star Conference Championship quarterfinals at the Comerica Center.
The Lions outscored the Pioneers in three of the four quarters, but TWU used a 22-8 third quarter to take the win.
UAFS shot 46.2 percent in the first quarter as the Lions held a 14-13 lead after 10 minutes. Guard Baylee Fincher opened the game with a triple and added a fastbreak layup as the Lions went up, 8-4. TWU later used a 5-0 run to go up, 13-10, before layups by forward Sinetra Jones and guard Zyniah Thomas put the Lions back on top.
The Lions started the second quarter on a 7-0 run to lead 21-13, but the Pioneers hit eight consecutive free throws to get back in the game. UAFS held TWU to just 2-of-12 shooting in the second, but TWU went 11-for-12 from the line as the Lions took a 29-27 lead into halftime.
UAFS was held to 15.4 percent shooting in the third, as the Pioneers opened the frame on a 10-0 run. The Lions would only get as close as nine in the final seconds.
Free throws proved a key part of the game, as the Pioneers were 19-for-25 through three quarters while the Lions were just 4-for-5. UAFS went 8-for-10 from the line in the fourth while the Pioneers did not attempt a free throw. UAFS finished the game 12-for-15 from the line.
Both teams were strong defensively, with UAFS shooting 30.2 percent for the game and TWU only 35.3 percent. TWU had a 19-7 advantage in points off turnovers.
Fincher paced the Lions with 15 points and five rebounds, while guard Zyniah Thomas added 12 points, seven boards, two assists and two steals. Forward Kayla Brundidge pulled down seven boards, as well, while Jones contributed eight points.
UAFS finished the season with an 11-18 overall record.
