DENTON, Texas - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Women's Basketball battled against No. 18 Texas Woman's Thursday afternoon, but a late run allowed the Pioneers to hold off the Lions, 77-59.
Tied at 58 with 7:21 left, the Pioneers went on a 19-0 run over the next six minutes, with the lone point for the Lions coming on a free throw by guard Morgan Browning with 27 seconds left.
The Lions had battled back after trailing 28-15 after the first quarter, going into the break down 42-33 after a 5-0 run by guard Baylee Fincher just before the buzzer. Fincher connected on a pair of free thrown and then swished a three after a turnover as the horn sounded.
That sparked a 7-1 run to start the third quarter for the Lions, as they eventually tied the game at 47-47 on a three by Browning with 4:50 left in the quarter. The Pioneers answered with a 5-0 before the quarter ended with a 55-51 lead for TWU.
Guard Riley Hayes scored the first five points of the fourth for UAFS, followed by another jumper by Browning to tie the game at 58, but that would be the last field goal the Lions would make before the Pioneer run.
Turnovers plagued the Lions, as they committed 16 in the first half and 26 for the game, leading to a 23-13 edge in points off turnovers for TWU. The Pioneers also had 38 points in the paint and 16 fast break points.
Center Sinetra Jones led the Lions with a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds, shooting 8-for-13 from the floor. Browning added 13 points for the Lions while Fincher tallied 12 points and seven boards. Guard Hannah Boyett filled in multiple categories, finishing with six points, five rebounds, four assists and five steals.
The road trip continues for the Lions Saturday at 1 p.m. at UT Tyler, who is receiving votes in this week's WBCA Top 25 Coaches Poll. Â
