Lions sweep Greyhounds in Saturday matinee

FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Volleyball swept Eastern New Mexico Saturday at the Stubblefield Center, 25-22, 26-24, 25-16 behind a strong defensive performance to stay unbeaten in Lone Star Conference action.

The Lions held the Greyhounds to a .078 attack percentage, their second lowest mark of the season. The defense held ENMU to -.021 in set one.

Libero Paola Fragalle led the defensive effort with 17 digs while defensive specialist Taylor Lintz added 12 digs. Setter Chloe Price had 12 digs, as well, followed by 10 and nine from outside hitters Caelyn Gunn and Nyia Anderson, respectively.

Both teams collected eight blocks, with middle blocker Hannah Watkins tallying five for the Lions. Right-side hitter Reagan Macha added three blocks.

UAFS raced out to early leads in all three sets, but the Greyhounds battled back each time. In set one, the Lions led 10-4 before ENMU rallied back to make it 14-13. UAFS then scored four straight for some breathing room but the Greyhounds used a 5-0 run late to pull within 23-22. An attack error and an ace by Price would give the Lions the 1-0 advantage.

The Lions had an 11-3 lead in set two only to see the Greyhounds even it at 13-13 following a 6-0 spurt. ENMU briefly took a 23-22 lead, but four kills – including two by Watkins – allowed the Lions to score four of the final five points and take the set.

After the early lead was erased in set three, the Lions broke a 10-10 tie with an 11-3 run as they cruised to victory.

Gunn had a team-high 10 kills, while Macha, Watkins and Anderson all tallied seven kills. Macha hit .438 on 16 swings. Price dished out 27 assists in the win.

UAFS returns to the road Wednesday as it continues conference action at Oklahoma Christian.
