KINGSVILLE, Texas - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Volleyball received a number of contributions as the Lions took down St. Mary's, 25-19, 25-18, 22-25, 25-13 on the first day of the Lone Star Conference Preview Thursday.
Outside hitter Nyia Anderson powered the Lions' attack, hitting .395 and totaling a team-high 18 kills. Anderson was one of three to tally double figure kills, as right-side hitter Reagan Macha added 12 and outside hitter Caelyn Gunn recorded 11.
Gunn was a key factor on the defensive end, as well, registering a team-high 27 digs for a double-double. Libero Paola Fragalle notched 22 digs.
Setter Chloe Price had a double-double as well, passing our 45 helpers and digging up 19 attacks.
UAFS used a 5-1 run in set one to build a 15-10 advantage, receiving a pair of kills by Macha during the rally. The Lions led by as many as six before alternating points with the Rattlers to claim the opening set.
Set two saw the Lions hit .345 while tallying five blocks and forcing nine St. Mary's attack errors. The Lions would finish the match with seven blocks.
After the Rattlers rallied to take set three by scoring five of the last six points, the Lions bounced back in set four in a big way.
Although the Rattlers scored the first three points of the set, the Lions answered with five consecutive points on a pair of aces by Gunn and two attack errors by St. Mary's. Later that set, the Lions used a 7-0 burst to break the set open to 19-9 and never looked back to finish the match.
UAFS outhit St. Mary's .286-.022 in the final set.
