ODESSA, Texas – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Women's Basketball fell in the final seconds at UT Permian Basin Saturday, dropping a 70-68 decision to the Falcons in the Falcon Dome.
Tied at 68, the Lions had a chance to win the game, but the shot rimmed out and a loose ball foul allowed the Falcons to convert a pair of free throws with six seconds left. UAFS had another chance to tie or win at the buzzer, but again the shot would not fall.
UTPB led 30-29 at the break and then started the second half on an 11-0 run. The Lions would slowly chip away, as guard Morgan Browning drained a three at the buzzer to end the third with the Lions trailing, 50-43.
The Lions then used an 11-2 run in the fourth quarter to take a 56-55 lead, their first since the first quarter. UTPB regained the lead on the next possession before a three by guard Hannah Boyett put the Lions back up, 59-57.
UAFS led by three with under two minutes left before the Falcons tied the game with a three. A jumper by guard Zyniah Thomas put UAFS up 68-66, but once again the Falcons answered, setting up the final sequence.
Boyett led the Lions with 15 points in a game in which all 14 players scored. Guard Baylee Fincher added 11 points while three players chipped in with six points apiece. UAFS received 31 points from its bench.
UTPB won the rebounding battle in which it doubled up UAFS on the offensive glass, leading to a 17-4 edge in second chance points.
UAFS will have next week off before closing out the semester at Oklahoma Christian December 19.
