Lions' attack downs Rattlers in three sets

FORT SMITH, Ark. – Middle blockers Hannah Watkins and Angelina Hardison combined for 21 kills and a .714 hitting percentage as University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Volleyball swept St. Mary's, 25-20, 25-13, 25-13 Saturday at Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center.

Watkins finished with 10 kills on 12 attempts while hitting .833 and Hardison tallied 11 kills on a .625 attack percentage. UAFS hit .339 for the match, the third time hitting above .300 this season. UAFS hit .452 in set two and .351 in set three.

Outside hitter Caelyn Gunn was the third Lion with double figure kills with a team-high 13.

The Lions held just a 13-12 lead in set one before embarking on a 6-1 run fueled by three kills from Hardison and two from Gunn. St. Mary's ended the run with three straight points, but the Lions would settle in to take the opening set.

UAFS never trailed in set two, eventually extending a 12-8 lead with a 5-0 run. A second 5-0 run -featuring kills from four different players - grew the lead to 23-11 before the Lions closed out the set for a 2-0 lead.

The same could be said for set four, as the Lions broke a 4-4 tie with 7-1 burst, scoring the final three points of the run via Rattler attack errors. Leading 18-13, the Lions scored the final seven points of the match to finish off back-to-back sweeps.

Libero Paola Fragalle paced a back row that held the Rattlers to a .125 attack percentage with 26 digs, while outside hitter Nya Anderson added 15. Setter Chloe Price had a double-double with 41 assists and 15 digs.

The Lions doubled up the Rattlers in blocks, 6-3, with three from Watkins and two each from Anderson, Price and middle blocker Brianna Ball. Anderson also added three aces.

Next week sees the Lions hit the road for three matches, beginning Wednesday at UT Tyler.
