Threes not enough for Lions against Patriots

FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Women's Basketball connected on 13 threes Sunday but it wasn't enough to take down visiting UT Tyler Sunday, falling 74-67 at Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center.

The Lions were 12-of-28 from distance through the first three quarters as the game was knotted up at 56-56, but hit just 1-of-10 threes in the fourth and shot just 25.0 percent in the final 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, the Patriots shot 54.6 percent in the final stanza as they started the quarter on a 15-2 run.

A free throw by guard Nya Stewart pulled UAFS back within 71-64 with 1:46 remaining, but the Patriots connected on three free throws on the ensuing possession to put the game out of reach.

UT Tyler grabbed the early lead and led for the first 12 minutes until the Lions went on a 10-2 run midway through the second quarter for a 28-23 advantage. However, the Patriots closed the half of a 14-4 spurt to take a 37-32 lead into halftime.

The Lions then drained six threes in the third quarter, at one point taking a 56-50 lead before settling to the tie heading into the final frame.

Guard Riley Hayes scored a team-high 18 points on 6-of-15 shooting from beyond the arc, while Stewart added 13 points, five boards and five assists. Stewart had all 13 of her points in the second half.

Guard Hannah Boyett added 12 points on four threes and also had four boards and three assists.

Turnovers once again plagued the Lions, as they turned it over 18 times to nine for UT Tyler. The Patriots turned them into a 25-10 advantage in points off turnovers. UTT had a 24-12 edge in points in the paint, as well.

UAFS had a 38-27 edge on the glass and had 10 offensive rebounds, leading to 16 second chance points.

Next up for the Lions is a trip to Texas A&M-Kingsville on Thursday.
