DALLAS – Outside hitter Caelyn Gunn impressed in her collegiate debut, but it wasn't enough as University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Volleyball fell to UT Permian Basin in four sets, 27-25, 25-19, 13-25, 25-21 in its opening match of the Lone Star Conference Crossover.
Gunn led the Lions with 13 kills with a .393 attack percentage and was one dig shy of a double-double. She had five kills in set four.
This was the first loss for the Lady Lions all-time against the Falcons, previously having been 17-0.
UAFS trailed by as many as six in the opening set and later used a 7-0 run to turn an 18-14 deficit into a 21-18 advantage. Middle blocker Hannah Holland fueled the run with three kills.
The Falcons battled back to take a set point at 24-23 before the Lions scored back-to-back points for their own set point. However, the Falcons stole the set by scoring the final three points.
After UTPB took control of the match by winning set two, UAFS dominated set three, hitting .321 and holding the Falcons to -.071. The Lions had a 6-0 run in the middle of the set to stretch their lead to 16-6 and led by as many as 13 late in the set.
UTPB then returned the favor in set four by racing out to a 9-2 lead and holding that margin for much of the set. The Lions put forth one final rally, going on an 8-2 spurt to pull within 22-20. The Falcons then snuffed out that rally by scoring three of the final four points to take the match.
Holland added 10 kills with a .250 attack percentage, while outside hitter Reagan Macha and middle blocker Kaelyn McDonald each recorded six kills.
Three players yielded double-figure digs, led by libero Lauren Weber with 17. Setter Chloe Price and outside hitter Chloe Alderson each had 12 digs. Price dished out 30 assists, as well.
UAFS continues the LSC Crossover Friday at 6 p.m. against host Dallas Baptist.
