FORT SMITH, Ark. – A record four have been chosen as UAFS Athletes of the Week following their performances over the weekend.
Those athletes are Rachel Malik of women's cross country, Carlos Hernandez of men's cross country and Chyra Thompson and Hannah Holland of volleyball.
Malik ran a 5k time of 18:05.51 to place in 35th at the Missouri Southern Stampede, smashing the school record set by Kandace Young at the same event a year ago by over 20 seconds. Malik was recently named the Lone Star Conference Women's Cross Country Freshman of the Week for her performance.
Hernandez set a school record in the 8k with a time of 26:02.04, besting his previous personal best by more than 30 seconds at the Missouri Southern Stampede.
Thompson led the Lions with 30 kills last weekend in a pair of comeback wins over Lubbock Christian and Eastern New Mexico. She hit .318 and added seven blocks – four solo – as well. She had a season-high 17 kills on a .400 attack percentage in the win at Lubbock and had 13 kills and five blocks in the win at ENMU.
Holland was a force at the net for the Lions, totaling 14 blocks while adding 21 kills on a .395 attack percentage. She had seven blocks in each match, including four solo blocks against the Greyhounds. Holland had 12 kills with a .500 attack percentage at LCU and added nine kills at ENMU.
