ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The guard duo of Aaliyah Prince and Sydney Nunley combined for 36 points but University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Women's Basketball was unable to secure its first win of the season, as Henderson State defeated the Lions, 77-66, Saturday.
UAFS held the Reddies to 30.9 percent shooting from the field, but HSU made up the difference by going 12-for-28 from beyond the arc. Additionally, the Lions turned the ball over 23 times which led to a 25-14 advantage in points off turnovers for the Reddies.
Prince scored nine of her 19 points at the free throw line while tallying nine rebounds. Nunley was also active on the glass, pulling down seven boards. Guard Riley Hayes added nine points while forward Kayla Brundidge contributed five points and nine boards.
The Lions scored the first basket of the game on the opening possession, but a scoring drought of more than three minutes allowed the Reddies to take a lead that they wouldn't relinquish.
Despite the Reddies leading by as many as 13 in the third quarter, the Lions closed the final three-plus minutes of the quarter on an 11-2 run to pull within 51-47.
However, the Reddies opened the fourth quarter with a three and shot 50.0 percent in the quarter to pull away for the final margin.
UAFS outscored the Reddies 27-10 in bench points in had 38 of their 66 points in the paint. UAFS also won the rebounding battle, 53-44, with 13 coming on the offensive end.
The Lions will next seek their first win Wednesday at Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center as they host Northeastern State at 5:30 p.m.
