FORT SMITH, Ark. – Guard Nya Stewart appeared to swish a game-winning half court shot at the buzzer, but it was ruled that time expired as University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Women's Basketball fell 66-64 Friday at Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center.
UAFS held a 64-63 lead with less than a minute remaining on a pair of free throws by guard Paige Elston, but the Mustangs converted a three-point play two possessions later to grab the lead.
The Lady Lions had multiple chances with less than 20 seconds left but were unable to convert.
UAFS trailed 19-13 after the first quarter, but responded by draining four threes and holding the Mustangs to 37.5 percent shooting in the second, outscoring the Mustangs, 23-10, for a 36-29 advantage at the break.
Midwestern State came back to take a two-point lead midway through the third, but the Lions clawed back in front by using a 9-3 run in the final minute of the quarter.
UAFS fell behind by six with three minutes remaining before using a 7-0 run, capped by four Elston free throws.
Elston led the Lions with 23 points and was the only Lion to score in double figures. She shot 6-for-11 from the field and 9-for-10 at the free throw line.
Forward Mar'Shalia Lollie scored seven points while pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds. Four players scored five points apiece.
The game featured 11 ties and 10 lead changes.
UAFS heads on the road next week for a matchup at UT Tyler December 16.
