Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Boyett, Lady Lions snap shooting slump in blowout win

ODESSA, Texas – Sophomore guard Hannah Boyett broke out of her shooting slump to begin the season to score a season-high 25 points as University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Women's Basketball downed UT Permian Basin, 86-57, Sunday afternoon at the Falcon Dome.

Boyett entered the game shooting just 14.6 percent from beyond the arc, but was 7-for-11 Sunday and 4-for-4 from the line to lead the Lady Lions (2-4, 2-4 LSC) to a weekend sweep of the Falcons (1-2, 0-2 LSC).

UAFS dominated the second and third quarters, outscoring the Falcons 53-13 over the two frames. The Lions won the second quarter, 22-6, before rolling up a 31-7 margin in quarter three. UAFS shot over 60 percent during the stretch and made eight threes. Defensively, they held the Falcons to 12.5 percent from the field during that same time.

After making no more than four triples in any of their first four games, the Lions made eight Saturday and 11 Sunday.

Both teams struggled to score early, but the Falcons scored 13 points in the final three minutes of the opening quarter for an 18-15 lead before the UAFS defense clamped down. The Falcons scored 26 points in the fourth, but the Lions already had the game well in hand, leading by as many as 41 early in the fourth.

Freshman guard Nya Stewart continued to make an impact, scoring 13 points and knocking down a pair of threes. Senior guards Paige Elston and Dachelle Terry each added 12 points. Elston was solid distributing the ball once again, dishing out six assists while collecting six rebounds.

Senior center Mar'Shalia Lollie followed up her performance from Saturday with eight points and nine rebounds Sunday.

UAFS went 19-for-22 at the free throw line, and shot 47.5 percent from the floor. The defense held the Falcons to just 29.9 percent shooting and 15.6 percent from beyond the arc.

The Lions have had a knack for forcing turnovers this season, and forced 19 more in the win. UAFS outscored UTPB 23-8 in points off turnovers and 23-7 in fast break points.

UAFS will take next weekend off before returning home to face Texas A&M-Commerce January 14 at the Stubblefield Center.
