UAFS began Heartland Conference play in impressive fashion on Friday afternoon as the Lions tennis team beat the Dallas Baptist Patriots 5-2 at the Fort Smith Athletic Club.
It was the second match in four days for the Lions (1-4, 1-0), who began the season with four-consecutive losses.
UAFS trailed 1-0 after doubles play. Dallas Baptist picked up two of the three doubles wins to earn the point. The Lions' lone win came at No. 1 doubles where
Daniel Borrero and
Wian Van Dyke beat Grant McKenzie and Riley Smith 6-2.
The Lions dominated the singles matches, winning five of the six matches. Borrero beat McKenzie 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, Van Dyk beat Brian Nguyen 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles,
Brady Kenyon beat Gabe Garrido 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 3 singles,
Ethan Eddleman beat Smith 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5 singles and
Zach Delmonico beat Jacob Delao 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
UAFS will return to nonconference play at 2 p.m. on Wednesday when the Lions host Southern Indiana at Fort Smith Athletic Club. It will be the first of two matches for the Lions, who will also play Harding at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Searcy, Ark.
