Lady Lions Ease Past Dustdevils, Sweep Series

UAFS shot 52 percent from the field and turned 24 Texas A&M International turnovers into 27 points as the Lady Lions eased past the winless Dustdevils 68-41 in Heartland Conference play on Thursday night at the Stubblefield Center.

It was the first of two final regular-season home games for the Lady Lions (8-16, 5-6), who swept the regular-season series against the Dustdevils. UAFS will play its final home game of the regular season at 1 p.m. on Saturday when it hosts St. Mary's at the Stubblefield Center.

UAFS remained tied for fourth place in the conference, while Texas A&M International (0-23, 0-11) remained last. All eight teams in the conference will qualify for the conference tournament, which begins on Thursday, March 7, at the Union Multipurpose Activity Center in Tulsa, Okla.

The Lady Lions made 26 of 50 shots from the field – they were only 3-of-14 shooting from 3-point range – and made 13 of 19 shots from the free-throw line. Senior forward Ellie Lehne had a team-high 14 points to lead an otherwise balanced offensive performance by the Lady Lions.

Junior forward Tamera Gulley had six of the Lady Lions' 37 rebounds, helping UAFS out-rebound Texas A&M International by 14 rebounds. Senior guard Mariah Green dished out five of the Lady Lions' 16 assists and had three of their eight steals, and Gulley had two blocked shots.

Texas A&M International shot only 28 percent from the field (13 of 46) – it was 4-of-14 shooting from 3-point range – and shot 92 percent from the free-throw line. Sophomore guard Vanessa Oyola had a team-high 10 points and three steals for the Dust Devils, who trailed 31-19 at halftime. Junior forward Ciera Walker had a team-high five rebounds.
