Lady Lions' Hot Shooting, Defense Too Much For Dustdevils

UAFS shot a school-record 66 percent from the field on Thursday night as the Lady Lions posted a convincing 89-36 Heartland Conference road win against the Texas A&M International Dustdevils at the Kinesiology and Convocation Building in Laredo, Texas.

It was the second game of a three-game road stint for the Lady Lions (6-12, 3-2), who are 1-1 on this road trip. The Lady Lions, who lost to the conference-leading Lubbock Christian Lady Chaps on Saturday, will play the St. Mary's Rattlers at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Bill Greehey Arena in San Antonio, Texas.

UAFS made 36 of 55 shots from the field – it was 6-of-15 shooting from 3-point range. The Lady Lions' hot shooting performance eclipsed their previous single-game high of 64 percent, which came against former conference member University of Texas of the Permian Basin on Feb. 10, 2011, at the Stubblefield Center.

UAFS also shot 69 percent from the free-throw line (11 of 16).

All 11 Lady Lions scored in the lopsided win. Junior forward Tamera Gulley scored a team-high 14 points, while senior guard Daijah Brown had 13 and senior forward Ellie Lehne and freshman guard Anna Bonham had 10 apiece.

Senior guard Mariah Green just missed a double-double, finishing with eight points and a team-high nine assists.

UAFS out-rebounded Texas A&M International by 19 rebounds (31-12) and had 10 offensive rebounds that led to 11 second-chance points. Gulley led a balanced Lady Lions rebounding effort with six rebounds.

It was the best defensive performance of the season by the Lady Lions, who held the Dustdevils to only 13 points in the second half. It was the fourth conference loss by 50 or more points for the struggling Dustdevils (0-16, 0-4), who were coming off a 51-point loss to Newman on Saturday.

It was the second-largest margin of victory for the Lady Lions during their NCAA Division II history. UAFS beat Ecclesia by 68 points (97-29) on Feb. 26, 2015, at the Stubblefield Center. It was UAFS' third win by 50 or more points in its 10-year NCAA Division II history.

Texas A&M International shot only 30 percent from the field (13 of 44) – it was 3-of-18 shooting from 3-point range – and shot 88 percent from the free-throw line (7 of 8). Guard Vanessa Oyola led the Dustdevils with 10 points. Forward Ciera Walker had a team-high four rebounds.

The Dustdevils committed 22 turnovers, which led to 27 points for the Lady Lions.
