UAFS shot almost 50 percent from the field in the first half of Friday's basketball season opener against Colorado School of Mines, but Lady Lions hot hands turned chilly in the second half.
The Lady Lions shot just 24 percent from the field over the third and fourth quarters, allowing the host Orediggers to pull away for a 53-40 win in the opening game of the Conference Challenge at Vokel Gymnasium in Golden, Colo.

The Lady Lions led 16-13 after the first quarter and only trailed 28-26 at halftime, but UAFS made just 2 of 12 shots from the field in the decisive third quarter, allowing Colorado School of Mines to widen its lead to nine points going into the final quarter.
UAFS shot 37 percent from the field for the game (17 of 46) – it was 3-of-12 shooting from 3-point range – and shot 50 percent from the free-throw line (3 of 6). Senior guard
Daijah Brown scored 12 points to lead the Lady Lions. Junior guard
Alexsis Brown had a team-high six rebounds.
The Lady Lions committed 23 turnovers, too, that led to 14 points for the Orediggers.
Colorado School of Mines shot 37 percent from the field (23 of 63) – it was 3-of-16 shooting from 3-point range – and shot 67 percent from the free-throw line (4 of 6). Guard Sammy Van Sickle had a team-high 15 points, while guard Anna Kollmorgen and Nicole Archambeau had 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Archambeau just missed a double-double, finishing with nine rebounds to help the Orediggers out-rebound the Lady Lions by eight rebounds. (39-31). Colorado School of Mines did have 17 offensive rebounds that led to 13 second-chance points.
