Mariah Green each scored in double-figures to lead the Lady Lions basketball team, which lost a hard-fought game 79-57 to the Pittsburg State Gorillas on Saturday in the Pittsburg State Classic at John Lance Arena in Pittsburg, Kan.
The Lady Lions (0-4) shot 32 percent from the field (23 of 72) – they were 5-of-19 shooting from 3-point range – and shot 86 percent from the free-throw line (6 of 7). Lehne scored 19 points, including three 3-pointers, and Green added 16 points with two 3-pointers.
Junior forward
Tamera Gulley had a team-high nine rebounds for UAFS, which narrowly lost the rebounding battle by five rebounds (41-36).
Pittsburg State (3-1) shot 55 percent from the field (31 of 56) – it was 9-of-24 shooting from 3-point range – and shot 62 percent from the free-throw line (8 of 13). Forward Athena Alvarado had 16 points to lead Pittsburg State, which led 39-19 at halftime. Guards Kaylee DaMitz and Shelby Lopez added 15 points apiece.
Alvarado and Lopez each had double-doubles, finishing with 10 rebounds apiece.
UAFS will make its home debut at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday when the Lady Lions host the Ouachita Baptist Lady Tigers at the Stubblefield Center.
