Koontz was named the Heartland Conference Hitter of the Week following his stellar offensive performance during the Lions’ season-opening series sweep of the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats this past weekend.
Koontz, who’s from Mount Pleasant, Texas, batted 0.538 with seven hits, including two doubles and a two-run home run, and five RBIs. The senior, who is tied for the conference lead in hits, also drew two walks and compiled a 0.600 on-base percentage.
Defensively, Koontz compiled a perfect fielding percentage with five solo putouts.
UAFS (3-0) beat defending MIAA Conference champion Northwest Missouri State 3-2, 11-1 (run-rule) and 11-10 in the three-game series at Crowder Field.
