Gibbs’ strong performance in the Union University National Guard Invitational proved to be twice as nice.
Gibbs shot a 5-over 149 to win the two-day, 32-golfer event, helping the Lady Lions post their first tournament win at the NCAA Division II level on Tuesday at Jackson Country Club in Jackson, Tenn.
UAFS shot a 62-over 638 (313-325), edging the University of Arkansas-Monticello by 12-strokes to win the championship. UAM shot a 74-over 650 (332-318). The Lady Lions led the tournament by 12 strokes over Shorter University after the opening round, while the Blossoms were fifth after the first round.
Host Union shot a 76-over 652 (330-322) and finished third, followed by Shorter (658), Freed-Hardeman (660) and Hendrix College (825).
Gibbs shot a 2-over 74 during Monday’s opening round to take the lead into the final round. She shot a 3-over 75 during the final round to hold off UAM’s Frida Rydberg, who was tied for second after the first round with a 5-over 77. Rydberg finished with a 7-over 151 (77-74).
Gibbs and Rydberg were named to the all-tournament team, along with Union’s McKenna Montgomery (153), Shorter’s Paula Oviedo (158) and Dallas Vaughn (159) and UAM’s Brianna Dickerson (159).
