It was already going to be a historical day for the UAFS Lions, but sophomore Jesus Galindo helped make it even more special.

Galindo become the first runner in the seven-year history of the men’s cross country program to win a meet, leading the Lions to the inaugural UAFS-Trinity Invitational Saturday at Fort Smith’s Trinity Junior High.

It was the first ever home meet for UAFS. The Lions placed all seven runners in the Top 10, scoring 21 points. Hendrix was runner-up with 40 points, placing three runners in the Top 10 and one runner in the Top 20.

Philander Smith, which was also slated to run in the men’s race, withdrew from the men’s and women’s races on Friday night.

Galindo covered the challenging 6k course in a time of 20:32.1 – the third best time ever in a 6k for the Lions. The Springdale, Ark., native just missed the school record, which he set with a time of 20:31 last season, and was within one-tenth of a second of tying the second best mark (20:32), which was set by sophomore Calvin McKinney last season.
